An executive director and I were visiting a potential donor who, in Moves Management terms, was still being qualified. Despite our agreed upon strategy, the director made an awkward ask twenty minutes into the visit. We did not receive a favorable response.

There is an important difference between mission expansion and mission drift. Mission expansion grows naturally from the organization’s original promise; mission drift carries the organization away from it. Vision ensures fidelity to the promise.

Vision and mission statements are more than words on a website. When used well, they become practical tools that guide decisions, strengthen fundraising, and help nonprofit organizations stay focused on what matters most.
